  1. What is the purpose of user registration in the XM Edition?
  2. What's the difference between Product Activation and User Registration?
  3. How is Support Path registration different from MicroStation on the Web registration?
  4. Is there a bulk registration utility for registering users?

Question 1: What is the purpose of user registration in the XM Edition?

Answer: Our original implementation of MicroStation on the Web endeavored to introduce and combine the registration of a user with the use of the product. User Registration and Product Activation are two separate, but complementary, implementations in the XM Edition. The purpose of registration, entered via the Support Path Help menu entry, is to make and maintain contact with individual users of Bentley applications. This helps Bentley to better understand who our users are and what applications they use, therefore enabling us to provide better service to them.

Question 2: What's the difference between Product Activation and User Registration?

Answer: Product Activation describes the process of readying a product for commercial, academic, or home use, based on the terms of the end user license agreement. User Registration, while often performed from within a Bentley product, registers the user of a Bentley product so that Bentley can enable online access to and/or subscribe the user to Bentley publications. SELECT Server XM can assist in either process, often easing implementation, especially in larger installations.

Question 3: How is Support Path registration different from MicroStation on the Web registration?

Answer: First, SELECT Server participates by providing a bulk registration interface as well as a verification of registered users, a "closing of the loop". It is designed to be completely transparent to the user, should the system administrator choose to make it so. Secondly, the registration process will not initialize until an application has been suitably activated. In this way user registration is not applicable for applications which are only being evaluated for short durations. Thirdly, registration is not required for users who are already registered via MicroStation on the Web. Finally, after a modest number of attempts, the user can dismiss the registration utility and it will not appear again.

Question 4: Is there a bulk registration utility for registering users?

Answer: Yes, there is a process for bulk registering users. In fact, SELECT Server assists in the verification of Support Path registration as well as previous registration implementations (MicroStation on the Web).
