ProjectWise 3.8 Upgrade Planning

The following is the suggested process for upgrading an existing ProjectWise 3.2 installation to ProjectWise 3.8. This process is intended to serve as general guidance only and will not apply to all installations. Bentley recommends that ProjectWise Administrators become familiar with the new capabilities of ProjectWise 3.8 before migrating their production environment to insure a successful migration.

ProjectWise 3.8 is not a full release of ProjectWise, rather it consists of a limited subset of the ProjectWise components. The components updated for ProjectWise 3.8 are:

• ProjectWise IDesktop
• ProjectWise Web Server
• ProjectWise Publishing Gateway
• ProjectWise Markup for the Web
• ProjectWise Document Publisher
• ProjectWise Application Server (only for usage with Bentley Model Streaming Application)
• ProjectWise SDK

It is not necessary to upgrade all components to ProjectWise 3.8; Administrators can pick and choose the components to upgrade depending on their specific requirements. The following is an explanation of the purpose of each updated component and any prerequisites or dependencies on other updated components.

ProjectWise iDesktop
Adds support for MicroStation V8, AutoCAD 2002, and Office XP. Contains a number of fixes to reported issues for previous versions of supported applications. This component should be installed for all ProjectWise Explorer 3.2 users and does not require upgrade of any other PW 3.2 components on client or server.

ProjectWise Web Server
Adds support for viewing and redlining with Viecon Publisher 3.8 from the ProjectWise Web Explorer and Web Explorer Lite. Adds the ability to configure the attributes displayed in the Web Explorer Lite main document frame. Updating PW Web Server not dependent on updates to iDesktop or Application Server. However, updating the ProjectWise Web Server does require that the ProjectWise Publishing Gateway, Viecon Publisher, Document Publisher and Markup for the Web components be updated to 3.8 if they are part of the ProjectWise installation.

ProjectWise Publishing Gateway
Provides integration between ProjectWise Web Server and Viecon Publisher 3.8. Updating this component is dependant on updating ProjectWise Web Server and Viecon Publisher.

ProjectWise Document Publisher
Updating ProjectWise Web Server to 3.8 version requires the update of Document Publisher to insure correct operation. Document Publisher is an optional ProjectWise component and is not deployed at all sites.

ProjectWise Mark-up for the Web
Updating ProjectWise Web Server to 3.8 version requires the update of Markup for the Web to insure correct operation. Markup for the Web is an optional ProjectWise component and is not deployed at all sites.

ProjectWise Application Server
Provides integration with Bentley Model Streaming server. This component should only be upgraded if user has purchased the Bentley Model Streaming application. Does not require the upgrade of any other ProjectWise 3.2 components.

ProjectWise SDK
Adds appropriate resources to support customization of ProjectWise and MicroStation V8 integration. Is dependent on the installation of ProjectWise iDesktop and the MicroStation V8 integration components. This update still provides appropriate resources for customizing integration with MicroStation/J and earlier versions. ProjectWise SDK is an optional component and is not deployed at all sites.

Upgrading existing ProjectWise 3.2 iDesktop users to ProjectWise 3.8 iDesktop

1. Ensure user has a functioning 3.2 installation of ProjectWise Explorer, ProjectWise QuickView and an other ProjectWise client components.
2. Uninstall ProjectWise 3.2 iDesktop using either Add/Remove Programs by running the ProjectWise 3.8 iDesktop Setup and choosing Remove.
3. Install or update any additional desktop applications for which integration with ProjectWise is desired.
4. Install ProjectWise 3.8 iDesktop. Be sure to select Custom installation to ensure that all desired application integration is desired. Note: it is only possible to integrate with either MicroStation/J or MicroStation V8, but not both simultaneously.
5. Restart the computer.
6. Log in to ProjectWise datasource and verify Program Associations. It will be necessary to configure any applications that were installed or modified during step 3 above.

Upgrading existing ProjectWise 3.2 Web Server to ProjectWise 3.8 (including Viecon Publisher)

1. Perform backup of production ProjectWise 3.2 Web Server.
2. Make copies of PWLiteServlet.properties, PWServlet.properties and pwdp.lic. The pwdp.lic file is the license file for ProjectWise Document Publisher and only exists if Document Publisher is installed and licensed.
3. Uninstall ProjectWise 3.2 Web Server Components. NOTE: The ProjectWise Publishing Gateway MUST be uninstalled before Viecon Publisher or ProjectWise Web Server. Recommended un-install order:
   • ProjectWise Publishing Gateway
   • Viecon Publisher
   • ProjectWise Document Publisher(if installed)
   • ProjectWise Markup for the Web(if installed)
   • ProjectWise Web Server
   
   
4. Reboot the server.
5. Reinstall ProjectWise 3.8 Web Server components and Viecon Publisher 3.8. The recommended order for installation:
   • ProjectWise Web Server
   • ProjectWise Markup for the Web(if needed)
   • ProjectWise Document Publisher(if needed)
   • Viecon Publisher 3.8
   • ProjectWise Publishing Gateway
     
6. Update Viecon Publisher License to operate with Select Server(see Viecon Publisher Help - Installing Viecon Publisher Licenses for more information)
7. Configure PWLiteServlet.properties and PWServlet.properties files, as needed.
8. Reboot the server to re-start all services.
9. Verify operation of all updated ProjectWise 3.8 components.

Upgrading existing ProjectWise 3.2 Application Server to ProjectWise 3.8
Note: Users should only upgrade the ProjectWise Application Server to ProjectWise 3.8 if Bentley Model Streaming server has also been obtained. There are no changes to the ProjectWise 3.8 Application Server beyond those necessary to support Bentley Model Streaming server.

1. Perform backup of production ProjectWise 3.2 Application Server.
2. Make copies of DMSKRNL.CFG and PW.LIC.
3. Uninstall ProjectWise 3.2 Application Server.
4. Install ProjectWise 3.8 Application Server.
5. Verify PW.LIC exists in \PWServer\license\ directory.
6. Copy DMSKRNL.CFG file into \PWServer\bin\ directory.
7. Re-boot server to restart services.
8. Verify ProjectWise datasources are still published correctly.
