Product: ProjectWise 3.8, ProjectWise XM
Operating System: All
Document Number: 9016

The following is the suggested process for upgrading an existing ProjectWise 3.8 database to ProjectWise V8 XM Edition. This process is intended to serve as general guidance only and will not apply to all installations. Bentley recommends that ProjectWise Administrators become familiar with the new capabilities of ProjectWise V8 XM Edition before migrating their production environment to ensure a successful upgrade.

Upgrading existing ProjectWise 3.8 databases to ProjectWise V8 XM Edition

Due to changes in the internal database structure, it is necessary to do this upgrade in three parts. The first part will upgrade your database to ProjectWise V8 2004 Edition version 8.5; the second will upgrade your database to ProjectWise V8 XM Edition; the third will upgrade any custom tables or Bentley Planner tables in your database.

This document assumes that you have already installed the ProjectWise V8 XM Edition Integration Server on your computer, and that you have performed any necessary migration of your database to the minimum requirements for ProjectWise V8 XM Edition.

  1. Ensure that you have full, recent backups of your production database prior to starting this procedure.

  1. Please contact Professional Services in order to obtain the ProjectWise V8 2004 Edition DMS upgrade kit.

  1. Unzip the ProjectWise V8 2004 Edition DMS upgrade kit to a directory on the machine where you installed the ProjectWise V8 XM Edition Integration Server. Do not unzip the files into the same directory you installed ProjectWise V8 XM Edition.

  1. Start a Windows command prompt.

  1. Change directory to the directory where you unzipped the files (ex: if you unzipped the files to c:\temp\pwv8conv, type the following command: cd /d c:\temp\pwv8conv)

  1. Execute the DMSCONV85.EXE program in the directory where you unzipped your files. Note the use of the –hfs program option, which suppresses history file migration. History file migration will be performed in step 7 of this document.

.\DMSCONV85.EXE –d <MyOdbcDatasource> -u <dbuser.dbpass> -hfs

  1. Change directory to your ProjectWise V8 XM Edition ProjectWise\bin directory (ex, cd /d c:\Program Files\Bentley\ProjectWise\bin)

  1. Execute the ProjectWise V8 XM Edition DMSCONV application with any necessary program options. If you have history files to migrate, now is the time to perform that operation via the appropriate DMSCONV command line options.

  1. After the ProjectWise V8 XM DMSCONV upgrade is finished, restart your ProjectWise V8 XM Edition Integration Server service.

  1. Start the ProjectWise V8 XM Edition Administrator application and log in to each converted datasource. For each datasource, you may be prompted to upgrade/convert any custom tables. Click OK.

  1. After the datasource(s) are converted via the ProjectWise V8 XM Edition Administrator application, the datasource is ready for use.
