Subject: Configuring the CalComp Tablet Driver
Product: MicroStation/J/SE, Bentley PowerDraft, PowerScope
Operating System: Windows® 95, Windows NT®

Wintab drivers for CalComp digitizing tablets are available on the GTCO CalComp site. When used with the appropriate CalComp tablet, the drivers provide MicroStation with full digitizing functionality. The CalComp TabletWorks Version 5.0 driver is documented in this TechNote (the Version 6 driver provided through the above link works in the same manner).

Note:
The CalComp drivers will not function properly with MicroStation and Windows 98 in a dual screen configuration. The Bentley driver should be used instead. For information on using the Bentley driver, see TechNote #8144 if you are using a CalComp tablet or TechNote #8147 if you are using a SummaGraphics tablet.

Configuring the CalComp Wintab Driver
After installing the CalComp drivers, the TabletWorks Control Panel must be setup for MicroStation (click Start > Programs > CalComp > Tablet Control Panel). For MicroStation to recognize the tablet you must first switch the tracking mode to Absolute. This setting has changed from previous CalComp drivers. To set the tablet to Absolute mode, select the WYPIWYG option button at the bottom left of the TabletWorks control panel. (See Figure 1)

You must also configure the TabletWorks software so that the buttons match the MicroStation Button Assignments. Whichever button you wish to use for Data, set to Left Click. Whichever button you wish to use for Reset, set to Right Click. All remaining buttons should be set to None. To change the button assignments select the Buttons tab. You will see a picture of the cursor. On the picture, click the button you would like to change; a red square will highlight the button. Directly to the right under Button Assignments you can change the action. Set the Data Button to Left Click and the Reset Button to Right Click.

If the digitizer is your only pointing device, you can modify the Screen and Tablet mapping areas in the TabletWorks control panel to decrease the range of the cursor. This also decreases the absolute coordinates of the tablet, and MicroStation will not be able to detect the area outside this mapping. The mapping areas defined must be larger than the digitizing setup (tracing) area and any menus attached in MicroStation. To be safe, when in MicroStation the Screen and Tablet areas should be set to the full size of the tablet. Also make sure the Enable Mapping option is turned off under the Mapping tab--if this option is on the dig par command in MicroStation will not work correctly. (See Figure 2)

Configuring the Buttons in MicroStation
To configure the cursor buttons choose Workspace > Button Assignments in MicroStation. The Button Assignments dialog box will open (see Figure 3). With the upperleft cursor button click the name of the button you wish to configure (Data, Tentative, Reset, Command, etc.) in the top section of the dialog box. The button name will highlight. After highlighting the appropriate button name, move your cursor to the lower section (Button Definition Area) and press the cursor button you want to assign to the action highlighted above. Place the cursor on the word "here" to make sure you're at the right location. In the top section you should see the "Invoked by" setting change.

Note: The Data button should always be invoked by the Left Button, the Reset button should be invoked by the Right button and all the remaining buttons should be invoked by a button number (for example Button 4, 5, 6, ..).
