Subject: Configuring the Bentley Tablet Driver with Kurta XLC Tablets
Product: MicroStation V8/J/SE, Bentley PowerDraft, PowerScope
Operating System: Windows® 95, Windows 98, Windows NT® (3.51 and 4.0)
Document Number: 8148

This document provides configuration instructions for the Bentley Wintab driver used with a Kurta XLC tablet.

The Bentley Wintab driver is available from the Bentley FTP site. The two files (wintab.exe and wintab32.dll) should be unzipped to the …Bentley\Program\MicroStation directory.

Installation Notes
Before you install the Kurta XLC tablet, a mouse must be connected to the computer. If no mouse is present, the cursor will not appear when the Wintab driver is started. Also check for the 25pin bridge adapterthe connection must reduce to a 9pin for MicroStation to recognize the tablet.

When the computer boots, the operating system will scan for devices on the serial ports. If a device is found and a service is not loaded, the operating system will sometimes disable the serial port. The Bentley Wintab driver does not deliver a service, so the tablet should be turned off when starting the computer. It is possible that you could leave the tablet turned on, as some newer tablets with a Plug and Play BIOS will not cause the port to be disabled.

Checking for other Wintab Drivers
Before installing the Bentley Tablet Driver, you need to be sure that any previously installed tablet drivers are removed. Search the entire hard drive for the following files: DIGISERV.*, WINT*.*, WTCLASS.*, WTCC.*, WTMAX.*, WTMAXK.* and WTKURTA.*. The only files you need are WINTAB.EXE and WINTAB32.DLL. Both of these files should be in the ..\ustation directory. If the search finds any other Wintab files, delete them and reboot the machine. If you are using Windows NT, go to the System Control Panel and select the Services and Devices icons. In both sections look for the following drivers: Wintab, Wintab32, WTClass, WTKurta, WTmax, WTmaxk, Digiserve and WTCC. Disable these drivers if found and restart Windows NT.

Configuring the Tablet

  1. Turn the tablet off. Leave the tablet off for 10 seconds to clear the memory, then turn the tablet on.
  2. Using the cursor's number 1 button, click the tablet's Reset button and then the tablet's Enter button. This will reset the tablet's memory.
  3. On the tablet, click Select, then P1, then Enter. This will set the tablet to the XLC mode.

Configuring the Bentley Wintab

Note: The Kurta XLC tablet does not fully support the native XLC format. When the tablet is configured for the XLC format it transmits a signal similar to the Numonics format. The Bentley Wintab driver should be configured to this format.

Start the Bentley Wintab Driver, WINTAB.EXE (doubleclick the application). At the Wintab interface screen select the Numonics 2200 Series for the Tablet. Continue by selecting the appropriate size, number of buttons and COM port (for a 4 button cursor select the 16 button option). If the COM ports are grayedout, repeat the "Checking for other Wintab Drivers" step above.
When the tablet driver is configured click the OK button. The Wintab driver interface will close. Run the WINTAB.EXE program again and the tablet should be tracking. If it is, click the Close button to exit Wintab. If it is not tracking, reboot the computer with the tablet turned off and double check the steps above.

You can either start the tablet driver prior to entering MicroStation, or leave it disabled. If disabled, MicroStation will automatically load the tablet driver when started. If MicroStation starts and the cursor is gone, open a design file and enter the DIG PAR command in the Command Window or Key-in browser. You should then see a little + sign; follow the prompts for the lower left and upper right corners.

Configuring the Buttons in MicroStation:
To configure the cursor buttons choose Workspace > Button Assignments in MicroStation. The Button Assignments dialog box will open (see Figure 1). With the upper left cursor button in the upper section click on the button name you wish to configure (DATA, TENTATIVE, RESET, COMMAND, etc). The button name will highlight. After highlighting the appropriate button name, move your cursor to the lower section (Button Definition Area) and press the cursor button you want to assign to the action highlighted above. Place the cursor on the word "here" to make sure you're at the right location. In the top section you should see the "Invoked by" setting change.

Note: The Data button should always be invoked by the Left Button, the Reset button should be invoked by the Right button, and all the remaining buttons should be invoked by a button number. (Ex. Button 4, 5, 6, ...)

Note: MicroStation Version 5.0 will not display the cursor in the digitizer setup area. The cursor is still active and will function properly when tracing. Elements placed in the digitizing area will display.
