Operating System: Windows® 95, Windows NT®
Document Number: 8109

In Windows 3.1x and Windows NT, the Logitech threebutton mouse drivers come configured with the three buttons as Left, Right and Middle. To get MicroStation to recognize the middle button, you first have to disable the middle button in the Logitech Control Panel.

This is not the case for Windows 95; if you set any button to Disabled/No Function, Windows 95 will ignore it completely. To use the middle button in MicroStation, Windows 95 requires Logitech MouseWare Version 7.0 or higher. (You can contact Logitech directly at 800-231-7717 or 510-795-8100 or connect to Logitech's Web site at www.logitech.com for more information on this software.)

  • To install the MouseWare Version 7.5 driver, go to the Start option in Windows 95 and run SETUP.EXE from MouseWare disk1. Insert disk 2 when prompted, then reboot the computer.
  • When you restart the system with the mouse plugged in, Windows 95 will alert you that it has detected a new mouse on the PS/2 Port and will ask if you would like to configure the new device. Select Yes and the Windows 95 Mouse Properties dialog box will open (See Figure 1).

Click on the Buttons folder tab. Set the buttons as follows:
Assign the Right button as Context Menu/Alternate Select
Assign the Middle button as Middle Button
Assign the Left button as Click/Select.
  • This setup makes the right button fully functional in Windows 95. Once the above setup is complete, you can go into MicroStation and configure the buttons.
  • In MicroStation, go to Workspace > Button Assignments. By default, the buttons will be set up to emulate a twobutton mouse. You can modify the buttons by highlighting the button (Data, Tentative, Reset) and clicking on the button you want to assign in the Button Definition Area. The standard setup would be assigning the Left button as Data, the Middle button as Tentative and the Right button as Reset (See Figure 2).

Windows NT Note:
Logitech has released a MouseWare Control Center (Mouse Properties) for Windows NT. This driver is available from Logitech by request. Follow the previous instructions for configuring the buttons for MicroStation.

Logitech has also posted an 8.01 driver for Windows NT on their Web site. This driver does not install the MouseWare Control Center. By default this driver sets the middle button to perform a double click action, therefore MicroStation will no longer recognize the middle button. You need to disable the double click action in the NT registry. Contact the Logitech Support Group at 1-800-231-7717 for the proper instructions on editing the registry. A second option is to request the 8.01 Mouseware Control Center, which will let you graphically program the middle button to the middle click action.
