Subject: Licensing Bentley MX and Bentley Arenium 2004 Edition
Product: Bentley MX and Bentley Arenium 2004 Edition
Operating System: All
Document Number: 8342

Since moving to the Bentley Licensing Model there have been several changes made to the way MX is licensed and works. As a result, we strongly suggest that you read the Bentley Licensing with MX and Arenium TechNote before going any further.

Although there are many similarities between the old and new methods, this document outlines the enhanced capabilities offered when using the Bentley License Manager and SELECTserver.

Terminology

The following terminology is used throughout this document and the installation. Depending upon the licensing route you take, you will need some/all of the following information in order to obtain a working license file:

Node-Locked Computer Name - The name that the user/administrator has assigned to the individual computer or workstation you wish to install MX upon. This unique name "fingerprints" a specific product serial number to a given piece of hardware running in node-lock mode.

Serial Numbers - The unique identifier of your MX products. You must have the appropriate serial number(s) before proceeding any further. Serial Numbers can be obtained in one of the following ways and is dependent upon your current situation.

  • If you currently have MX V2.5 or V2.6 installed, the MXStandalone or MXNetwork serial number is contained within the .MXS file name i.e. HPS<Serial Number>.MXS

Please quote the full .MXS filename. This file is found in the mfw\licensing folder.

Alternatively you can quote the "Network Reference Number" by selecting Help > About MX > License Schedule from within MX.

  • The SERVER SERIAL NUMBER (14 digits) is listed on your Bentley Product Certificate that will have been sent to you by Bentley if MX was purchased since June 2003.
  • Quote the relevant MXNetwork serial number or MXStandalone serial number found via the Bentley License Tool.

Bentley SELECT Administration Center (BAC) - You need to contact BAC for your license file, please E-mail your closest BAC with your license request:

Requesting a License File

Stage 1: Pre-requisites for obtaining Bentley MX 2004 Edition, Arenium and other Bentley products.

In order to download any Bentley product, create a MySELECT CD or to complete the licensing process, one or more of the following permissions must be active. Your SELECT Site Administrator can change these permissions online.

  • SELECT Download
  • MySELECT CD
  • License Manager

The name of your SELECT Site Administrator(s) can be obtained from the SELECTservices website by clicking here (you must be logged into SELECTservices Online to access this tool) and selecting List SELECTservices Administrators.

Stage 2: Choosing the way in which you wish to License MX and/or Arenium.

SELECT subscribers may license Bentley MX Node-locked (standalone) or concurrently. With the latter, various options exist depending upon whether or not you already have SELECT License Manager installed.

Note: Arenium can only be licensed concurrently.

Please select one of the following options:

  • Node-locked (standalone)
  • Concurrent licensing, I have an existing SELECT License Manager
  • Concurrent licensing, I do not have an existing SELECT License Manager

Stage 3a: Applying for a Node-locked or standalone license.

Please format an E-mail using the example 3a below for each computer or workstation MX will be installed upon then e-mail it to the appropriate Bentley Administration Center (BAC) listed at the end of this document.

Note: Arenium can only be licensed using concurrent licensing.

Example 3a

Stage 3b: Apply for a Concurrent license - I have an existing SELECT License Manager

Only SELECT subscribers can take advantage of concurrent licensing i.e. license MX or Arenium products together with other existing Bentley products.

Please format an E-mail using the example 3b below, then e-mail it to the appropriate Bentley Administration Center (BAC) listed at the end of this document.

Example 3b

If you are already using a Bentley SELECT License Manager, serial numbers can be viewed using the SELECTserver Administrative Interface in the SELECTserver program group.

Stage 3c: Apply for a Concurrent license - I do not have an existing SELECT License Manager

Only SELECT subscribers can take advantage of concurrent licensing i.e. license MX or Arenium products together with other existing Bentley products.

Important Note: In this instance the Computer Name is the name of the machine that will become your Bentley SELECTserver.

Please format an E-mail using the example 3c below, then E-mail it to the appropriate Bentley SELECT Administration Center (BAC) listed at the end of this document.

Example 3c

Note: Individual computers taking advantage of SELECTserver do not need to be individually identified - only the server name needs to be identified.

Stage 4: What next?

Having applied for your new MX or Arenium license, once verified, your BAC will provide a unique license key allowing concurrent use by connected users of all appropriate software and applications on a given SELECTserver.

Please note that this process could take up to 5 days. You can apply for your license file in advance of install to mitigate this. In the case of MX, you can install the software and make use of the 15 minute tryout facility whilst waiting for your license key to arrive.
